OnePlus 6 will have a notch – Confirmed by Carl Pei:
Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, has officially confirmed that OnePlus 6 will have a notch. It gives a positive spin and describes it as “adding more space on the screen instead of taking it all away.”
Pei defends the decision saying that OnePlus notch will be better implemented than other Android manufacturers like recently launched Huawei P20 Pro. The notch on the OnePlus 6 will measure 19.62 x 7.69 mm. A smaller notch would mean a smaller camera module, which in turn means lower quality photos. The same applies to the headset. And people want their notification LEDs.
The notch is larger than the Essential but smaller than the iPhone X. On the other hand, the X has a miniature Kinect there. Pei does not feel the need to use such a complicated sensor, so the OnePlus 6 is likely to adhere to the fingerprint reader and camera-based face recognition.
The new model will free up space on the bottom and replace the standard Android navigation buttons with gestures … just like the iPhone X. Essentially, Apple is paving the way forward and while component suppliers produce parts for the new iPhone, those parts are also available for Android makers, including OnePlus.
Carl Pei is careful to avoid mentioning the Oppo R15, which established the hardware model for OnePlus 6 as Oppo R phones did for OnePlus phones in recent years. That does not invalidate his claims, but apart from a wood grain, the 6 will not have a terribly original design.
