Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are Official:

The wait is finally over and the new Huawei flagship phones, P20 and P20 Pro, have been presented in Paris. Both phones have been kept in the rumor for more than 4 months and were expected to come out in February during the MWC 2018.

Here’s the live stream in case you missed.

Huawei P20 Pro and P20

Now that everything is official, let’s see what these two devices offer.

Huawei P20 Pro:

First, we take a look at the most powerful and exciting Huawei P20 Pro. As mentioned above, the leaks turned out to be true, It’s the first phone in the world configured with three cameras.

As expected, it includes a 6.1-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a notch. The screen comes with an odd aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a resolution of 1080 x 2244 pixels. The screen uses a Pentile RGBW matrix, very similar to the Huawei Mate 10.

The screen is also accompanied by a multi-purpose fingerprint sensor on the front. The design of P20 Pro brings a major change from what we have seen in the previous two generations. Instead of metal, Huawei chose a modern double-glass body supported by a metal frame.

The Pro version also comes with IP67 water and dust resistance for total peace of mind when using the phone around water.

P20 Pro will be available in five colors: black, midnight blue, rose gold and golden depending on the region. The color of the signature is called Twilight and it has a very remarkable gradient with a color change.

There are no surprises when it comes to the specs of P20 Pro. The P20 is powered by a Kirin 970 – an octa-core processor (4x A73 + 4x A53). There is only a single storage configuration, that is, 128 GB, along with 6 gigs of RAM. Fortunately, you get a slot for SIM + microSD hybrid card, so there is the possibility of adding more storage (up to 128 GB).

The graphics are handled by the G72MP12 chip. The Kirin chip also includes a dedicated NPU for machine learning and artificial intelligence optimizations.

Huawei has not stopped at the software department since the phones come with the latest Android 8.1 with EMUI 8.1. The stereo speakers of previous generations are still present as well.

We all know that 2018 is the year of the annoying notches, but Huawei has added an ingenious feature that allows you to hide the notch by darkening the area around the notch as if they were never there. Of course, you will still notice some light leakage since it is not an OLED panel.

Let’s move on to the part that we were all waiting for: the configuration of three cameras. The Leica triple camera system uses a large f/1.7 40MP color sensor with f/1.8 lens and OIS, accompanied by an 8MP color telephoto lens with f/2.4 lens, and the third sensor has a separate slot in it which is a 20 MP monochromatic sensor with an aperture of f/1.6.

There is a 4-mode autofocus (PDAF, laser, contrast and depth detection), a two-tone LED flash and a color temperature. Huawei says that the new configuration of the camera is capable of a 3x optical zoom and a 5x hybrid zoom.

It does not end here. Other amazing features include an incredible ISO of up to 102,400. Huawei claims to have an “instant” autofocus anywhere in less than 3 meters and a sleep-to-shot time of just 0.3 seconds.

There is more. Huawei has caught up with ultra-slow videos from Samsung and Sony last year and now supports 720p video at 960 fps. Huawei relies heavily on its artificial intelligence for many features and effects of the camera.

Huawei P20 Pro

With all the new rear camera technology, the front camera almost goes unnoticed. Huawei made use of a 24MP sensor with an aperture f/2.0. It is capable of Face Unlock through 2D mapping, among other things, as background effects, beauty, and lighting.

The company claims that its Face Unlock is twice as fast as Apple’s iPhone X.

As always, Huawei made sure that all this hardware does not disappear in a matter of hours since the phone has a large 4000 mAh battery. You also get Super Charge, owned by Huawei, which can charge up to 58% in 30 minutes.

All these features have a price, a deep dent in your bank account. The phone is priced at € 900. The phones are available all over the world.

Huawei P20:

Then comes the smaller P20 that passes through several features that we have seen in the Pro variant, but it remains fairly competitive in the mainstream market segment.

The P20 comes with a smaller screen of 5.8 inches with the same resolution (1080 x 2244 pixels) and uses the same screen technology. There is still a notch on the top and a multipurpose fingerprint sensor on the bottom.

The design and construction are the same as those of the P20 Pro; however, the smaller brother doesn’t have IP67 certification but IP53 splash protection with dust resistance.

All the color options we have seen for the P20 Pro are also available for the P20, including the exclusive colors Twilight and Black, Midnight Blue, Pink Gold, Champagne Gold.

Not much has changed in terms of performance since the P20 also has Kirin 970 octa-core processor (4x A73 + 4x A53), with AI functions. RAM has been reduced to 4 GB, while storage has been reduced by half to 64 GB. The SIM-microSD hybrid card slot is still available.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro

P20 also has G72MP12 graphics chip with stereo speakers.

The smaller flagship makes use of the same software as the Pro variant, that is, Android Oreo 8.1 with EMUI 8.1. The notch hiding function is also present.

In Huawei P20, the configuration of the Leica Triple Camera that we saw in the P20 Pro is gone, replaced by a typical Huawei dual camera configuration that makes use of a monochrome and a color sensor.

The main sensor is a new sensor 1 / 2.3 12MP RGB with OIS, lens f/1.6 and 1.55μm pixels while the second one makes use of the same monochromatic sensor of 20MP, behind a lens f/1.6, we saw it in Mate 10 .

The rest of the characteristics are also transferred to the younger brother. P20 has 4-way autofocus, two-tone LED flash, and ultra-fast 720p 960 fps videos. While the camera can make portraits and lighting effects, the optical zoom is reduced to 2x. The front camera uses the same 24MP camera with f/2.0 lens. P20 can also make Face Unlocks as the Pro variant.

The phone comes with a decent battery of 3,400 mAh with support for Huawei Super Charge.

The P20 costs € 680 and is available worldwide.
